Following the 2023–24 season’s traditional production of Puccini’s La bohème, the Atlanta Opera’s Discoveries series continues the Bohème Project in September with two immersive productions at Pullman Yards. Produced by Tomer Zvulun and featuring Ukrainian-Israeli-American designer, director, and multimedia artist Vita Tzykun, the Bohème Project presents repertory performances of a modern-day La bohème — reimagined with the COVID-19 pandemic replacing tuberculosis — alongside the Broadway musical it inspired, Jonathan Larson’s Rent. Larson’s show updates Puccini’s timeless story of friendship, passion, and art by setting it amidst the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1990s. Both productions will share the same set and unfold in and around the seated audience, creating an immersive experience. Featuring different casts and musical ensembles, the two shows will alternate performances for most of the run.
